Early Life and Influences
Dr. Weniger’s path began with curiosity. The second of four children, he was the one always asking “why” and “how.” He spent endless hours constructing airplanes and inventions out of Legos, inspired by weekends spent flying with his father.
His family was steeped in medicine—his grandfather an academic psychiatrist, his father a physician. Yet, even as a young man, Dr. Weniger’s interests stretched wide. He was an avid trombone player, a licensed pilot, and an analytical thinker who could have pursued any number of careers.
A Defining Decision
During his time at the University of Notre Dame, he wrestled with three potential paths: investment banking, medicine, or aviation. Clarity came one Sunday night during Mass, when the assistant rector of his dorm offered advice that would shape the rest of his life:
“No matter what you choose, make sure you are helping people as much as you can.”
That simple message became his guiding principle, one that continues to define his work today.
Academic Exploration and Focus
Initially, Dr. Weniger switched his studies from pre-med to engineering after hearing his father’s caution about the changing medical field. He quickly discovered that, while he excelled in engineering, his passion lay elsewhere. He loved science but not math, and his electives in finance and investment theory revealed an additional fascination with how things work, both mechanically and economically.
Ultimately, he majored in Biochemistry, graduated Magna Cum Laude, and set his sights back on medicine, determined to combine intellect, problem-solving, and human connection.

At the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, a pivotal mentorship helped shape his specialty. Dr. Weniger sought out renowned plastic surgeon Dr. Peter Johnson for research experience. Instead of accepting him immediately, Dr. Johnson challenged him to write a paper explaining why he wanted to work in the lab.
By the next morning, the paper was on his desk. That initiative earned Dr. Weniger a place in Dr. Johnson’s tissue engineering lab and launched a lifelong mentorship. The experience led him to plastic surgery, a field where art and science converge.

After completing three years of residency, Dr. Weniger took an unusual step for a future surgeon: he enrolled in the accelerated MBA program at the Katz School of Business at the University of Pittsburgh. With a full scholarship and stipend, he immersed himself in finance, operations, and leadership while continuing his medical training.
His mentor, now the CEO of a biotech startup, encouraged the decision, recognizing how a deep understanding of business would enhance his future in private practice and innovation.

Plastic surgery, as Dr. Weniger discovered, requires a rare combination of technical precision and creative problem-solving. He recalls a memorable case from his residency when he helped rebuild a patient’s skull using split ribs after a brain tumor removal.

Dr. Weniger met his wife, Jennifer, when she was a recovery nurse and he was a medical student on a plastic surgery rotation. He remembers seeing her for the first time and thinking she looked “like Snow White with blue eyes and black hair.”
They married, built a family, and today share three children and a busy, joy-filled life. Jennifer helps with office management, working closely with Michelle, Dr. Weniger’s longtime office manager.
“I used to think of myself as a plastic surgeon who has a family,” he reflects. “But about 12 years ago, I realized I’m actually a husband and a father who works as a plastic surgeon.”
He enjoys fishing with his teenage son and visiting his two daughters, both students at the University of Notre Dame.

When he’s not in the operating room, Dr. Weniger’s wide range of interests reveals the same curiosity that shaped his childhood. He’s a trombonist who once played in the symphony at Notre Dame, a pilot, a fly-fisherman, and a mentor to medical students, often inviting them to shadow him both at work and at home.
Two decades into his career, he still sees plastic surgery not as a job, but as a calling. And though he jokes that his aviation hobby has taken a backseat, he admits that his mind is always looking toward the next horizon.
