5 Best Frozen Hamburger Patties

If you are looking for the best hamburger patty, you’ve come to the right place

Our panel of three tasters cooked, flipped, and devoured thirteen frozen beef burgers so you would know the ones worth stocking up on. These burgers can make the perfect mail order gift for that meat lover you know. We were looking for a fresh, flavorsome taste and juicy texture but, just as important, we wanted to know where the meat came from.

We’ve noticed through the years that people have become more and more disconnected with where their food comes from. There is a story about our food that just doesn’t start at the grocery store. Did you know that a large portion of the meat we’re consuming may come from an entirely different county altogether?

The USDA voluntary labeling policy allows beef that is not from the U.S. to be salted, cooked, cut, or repackaged here and still be labeled a product of the U.S

Millions of pounds of beef brought into the U.S. come from countries where production and processing standards may be lower. You also have to wonder….how long did the meat take to get here??

The USDA voluntary labeling policy allows beef that is not from the U.S. to be salted, cooked, cut, or repackaged here and still be labeled a product of the U.S. In December 2015, Congress repealed the “country of origin” labeling regulations and so meat producers no longer have to be transparent with consumers.

How We Rated Frozen Burgers

These are the two metrics we used to determine each burger’s ultimate ranking:

Appearance and Consistency: What is the texture of the patty? Is the meat basically minced? Is the texture similar to that of a gentle-shaped fresh-ground beef burger?  Our preferences went to patties with larger pieces of meat over those that tasted like they were of finely ground beef. In terms of shape, it’s all about preference. The thinner patties are quicker to cook but easy to overcook. Thick patties have more leeway with cooking times but are more apt to remain frozen in the middle. As this is more about preference, it didn’t play a major factor in our rankings.

Taste: This was our primary ranking factor. Taking a bite and really tasting the meat was our primary focus.

How We Cooked the Burgers

  1. All were cooked from frozen.
  2. Preheat in a Cast iron-pan. We turned our stove to medium and got our pan to even heat so that when we threw the frozen burger on there it sizzled.
  3. Leave it be. We cooked all the frozen patties by sight rather than for a specific amount of time. We let the burger get a nice sear on the first side-and never poked it, prodded it, or pressed it. Once natural beef juices started to appear on the top of the patty, we flipped. (That being said, you’re looking at about 7 minutes and 5 minutes.)
  4. Use a meat thermometer. We cooked all the burgers to medium rare, which meant a minimal 145 degrees F internal temperature.

Of course you can also use a grill, air fryer, or your oven broiler, but for the test we wanted to ensure a method that everyone had access to.

What do you season frozen burgers with?

Our favorites are just salt, pepper, and butter, but plenty of other things can enhance your patties and create unique flavors. Here’s a list of suggestions for seasoning frozen burgers:

  • Salt
  • Pepper
  • Butter
  • Garlic Powder
  • Onion Powder
  • Chili Powder
  • Lowry’s Seasoned Salt
  • Worcestershire Sauce
  • A-1 Steak Sauce

When should you season frozen burgers?

A little butter or oil at the start to prevent sticking, then season when they are nearly done cooking. This will prevent the seasonings from burning, yet get them exposed to some heat to better meld the flavor with the beef.

Can you cook frozen burgers without thawing?

Cooking frozen burgers is the preferred method and the way they are designed to be cooked. People typically buy patties frozen for convenience, and not having to thaw them increases that convenience.

Should I thaw frozen hamburger patties?

You can thaw your patties, but it’s not recommended. Thawing ruins part of what makes being able to grab patties from the freezer convenient. The patties are designed to be cooked straight from the freezer. Some people like to microwave their frozen burgers to thaw before cooking but that is a big no-no as it can ruin the texture of the meat.

Can you cook frozen burgers on the stove?

Sure! That’s what we did with thirteen frozen hamburger patties.

How long do frozen burgers take in the oven?

On average, it takes 25 minutes at 425 degrees for frozen patties to cook. About 20 minutes on one side-then flip-cook for another 5 minutes or so.

Can you grill frozen burgers?

Yes, you can! As a matter of fact, that might be the best method. Even when grilling from frozen, the smoke from the grill will add flavor. But we know that not everyone has access to a grill. No matter whether you’re grilling, cooking on a stove top, or in the oven, it’s best not to attempt to thaw the meat first. If you do, you run the risk of ruining the texture of the meat and ending up with a dry and bland patty.

Can you cook a frozen hamburger patty in the microwave?

No. If you do, you are on your own. The microwave will alter the texture of the meat and make it less appealing. Also, microwaves tend to not cook evenly, so you may have issues with some parts being overcooked while some are undercooked.

How do you keep frozen burgers from shrinking?

Whether frozen or handmade fresh, burger patties will shrink when cooking since they are losing moisture content. That said, frozen burgers will retain their moisture better and remain juicier since it will take longer for the fats and liquid to release (another reason you shouldn’t try to thaw your patties before cooking them).

The best frozen burgers are out there waiting for you to eat. It couldn’t be easier: order, cook, and enjoy! The hardest part will be waiting for delivery!
